South Korea to equip indigenous MBTS with jammers against suicide drones 18/04/2025 | Mike Rajkumar

South Korea’s Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) has announced that domestically produced K2 BLACK PANTHER will be equipped with jammers to counter suicide drones as a part of a rapid pilot project.

DAPA announced earlier in April, that it had selected the 'Intelligent Electromagnetic Warfare-based Counter-Drone Response System' as the target project for the '25-1 Rapid Demonstration Project.

"I hope that this selection for the Rapid Demonstration Project will be an important turning point for our military to quickly secure the means to effectively respond to enemy drones," said Han Kyung-ho, head of the Future Power Business Division of the Defense Acquisition Program Administration and chairman of the Rapid Demonstration Project Promotion Committee. "We will continue to rapidly apply private sector innovative technologies to the military through the Rapid Demonstration Project and raise the level of defense science and technology."

The Defense Rapid Acquisition Technology Research Institute, which is the rapid demonstration project management agency, plans to issue a bid notice in May, with the goal of project commencement this year. A prototype is planned to be produced in approximately two years of research and development, with plans for a trial deployment with the Republic of Korea Army (ROKA) from 2028.

The "Intelligent Electromagnetic Warfare-Based Counter-Drone Response System" is a system in which jammers will be fitted on MBTs to neutralize through jamming, not only multi-purpose drones but also suicide drones that descend vertically at high speeds.

The counter-drone jammer will be able to detect detects remote control signals from all directions and automatically undertake electromagnetic jamming, once it recognizes a threat signal. The ROKA already deploys weapon systems that can defend against enemy drones in specific areas, but with this pilot project it is expected that individual tanks will also be able to neutralize enemy drone attacks through jamming.
