The Pakistan Navy’s second HANGOR Class submarine, designated to be named PNS/M SHUSHUK was recently launched for trials by Wuchang Shipbuilding Industry Group at Shuangliu Base, Wuhan, China. The Pakistan Navy’s first HANGOR-class submarine was launched in April 2024.
Speaking at the launch ceremony of the second submarine, the Pakistan Navy’s Vice Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Ovais Ahmed Bilgrami, emphasized that the HANGOR-class submarines, equipped with state-of-the-art weapons and sensors, would play a pivotal role in maintaining the balance of power and maritime order in the region. He also expressed satisfaction with the project’s progress.
These submarines will feature Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) systems and will be fitted with submarine-launched cruise missiles that will be able to engage shore/ship targets at standoff ranges.
Pakistan had contracted the China Shipbuilding & Offshore International Company (CSOC) for 8 HANGOR-class submarines under a multi-billion dollar deal in 2015.
Under the terms of this contract, 4 submarines will be built in China, while the remaining 4 will be built in Pakistan at Karachi Shipyard & Engineering Works Ltd (KS&EW) under a Transfer of Technology (ToT) programme.
