According to recent rumours in the press, Indonesia would be interested in purchasing the Italian Navy's aircraft carrier GIUSEPPE GARIBALDI second hand.
According to our sources, the interest is real and the operation has been talked about for some time. In the Indonesian Navy, the GARIBALDI could mainly take on the role of drone carrier.
Recently, the Turkish company Baykar and the Indonesian company Republikorp signed an agreement to set up a joint venture for the production in Indonesia of 60 navalised TB-3 and 9 AKINCI drones for the needs of local armed forces.
The TB-3, which made its first take-off and first landing from the Turkish aircraft carrier ANADOLU on 19 November, is a significantly improved version of the TB-2, has folding wings and a reinforced undercarriage, and would operate from the GARIBALDI, using its ski-jump to take off in better loading conditions.
Relations between Indonesia and Italy are currently very good, as demonstrated, just to stay in the naval field, by the acquisition by the Indonesian Navy of the 2 PPA (Multi-Purpose Vessels) ex Italian Navy, RUGGIERO DI LAURIA and MARCANTONIO COLONNA, renamed BRAWIJAYA 320 and PRABU SILIWANGI 321, which will be officially delivered during the year.
