Singapore accelerates armed forces modernisation 10/03/2025 | Mike Rajkumar

Singapore will accelerate the modernisation of its armed forces to enhance their capability in multi-domain conflict. Singapore’s Defence Minister Dr Ng Eng Hen recently outlined some of the island nation’s key procurement priorities.

Dr Ng Eng Hen stated that the Republic of Singapore Navy’s (RSN) fleet of 4 custom-made German submarines (TKMS' TYPE 218SG) were not sufficient for a fleet, and as a result, would procure 2 more submarines, to make up a total of 6 German-built submarines. The RSN started with its INVINCIBLE-class submarine programme in 2017. The programme is on track and all 4 submarines on order are slated to be operational around 2028.

The RSN will also launch its first Multi-Role Combat Vessel (MRCV) later this year. The new MRCVs, built by ST Engineering Marine, will replace the RSN’s VICTORY-class corvettes that have been in service since 1989. As compared to the VICTORY-class, the new MRCVs are larger and have an operating range that is 3 times greater.

Dr Ng Eng Hen outlined the Boeing P-8A and Airbus C-295 as two possible replacements for the Republic of Singapore Air Force’s (RSAF) Fokker-50 Maritime Patrol Aircraft which are now due for replacement. The Fokker-50s have been in service since 1993. It had already been announced earlier, that the RSAF would acquire 8 more Lockeed Martin F-35As, in addition to the 12 F-35B purchase previously announced.

The Singapore Army will receive a new Infantry Fighting Vehicle (IFV) called the TITAN. The wheeled IFV will have its firepower upgraded with a 30mm cannon as a Remote Weapon System. It will also be equipped with counter-Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) capabilities.

Dr Ng Eng Hen also announced that the Army’s High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) will also be upgraded with more capable rockets.

Singapore’s Armed Forces have transformed into a modern four-service military, that is able to operate effectively across all domains of air, land, sea, and digital. The acquisition of additional conventional submarines, 5th gen fighters, new MPAs, Multi-Role Combat Vessels and IFV and HIMARS upgrades will further boost the combat capability of the SAF.
