Indian Naval Anti-Ship Missile Programme nears completion 26/02/2025 | Mike Rajkumar

India’s Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) along with the Indian Navy has completed the third succesful test launch of their new indigenously developed Naval Anti-Ship Missile (NASM-SR). As part of the test launch conducted this week, a NASM-SR was launched from an airborne, navy MK-42B SEAKING helicopter against a ship target.

“The trials have proven the missile’s Man-in-Loop feature and scored a direct hit on a small Ship target in sea-skimming mode at its maximum range,” the DRDO announced on its official X channel. The test launch also validated the weapon’s high bandwidth two-way datalink system, which is used to transmit seeker live images back to the pilot for in-flight retargeting. As per an Indian MoD spokesperson, the NASM-SR was launched in ‘Bearing-only, Lock-on after Launch’ mode with several targets in close vicinity.”

The missile was initially locked on to a large target within the specified zone of search and during the terminal phase, the operator selected a smaller hidden target which was engaged successfully. The missiles features an indigenous Fiber Optic Gyroscope-based INS and Radio Altimeter for mid-course guidance and an indigenous Imaging Infra-Red (IIR) seeker for terminal guidance.

Other domestically developed components for the missile include an integrated avionics module, electro-mechanical actuators for aerodynamic and jet vane control, thermal batteries and a PCB warhead. It uses solid propulsion with an in-line eject able booster and a long-burn sustainer.

The NASM-R is mounted on a SEAKING helicopter using an indigenously developed launcher. The NASM-SR is being developed by different DRDO labs including Research Centre Imarat, Defence Research and Development Laboratory, High Energy Materials Research Laboratory and Terminal Ballistics Research Laboratory.

The ongoing development of the NASM-SR is another step forward in India’s fast growing portfolio of domestically developed missile systems, which are backed by sizeable orders from the Indian armed forces.
