From pixels to pilots, CAE's PRODIGY meets GA-ASI's SKYGUARDIAN 21/02/2025 | Marco Giulio Barone

The collaboration between General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI) and CAE marks a significant leap forward in the realm of unmanned aerial systems (UAS) training. Announced on February 18, 2025, this long-term agreement focuses on the development of next-generation mission trainers for the MQ-9B SKYGUARDIAN Remotely Piloted Aircraft System (RPAS). The deal includes an initial order for 11 mission trainers, with the potential to deliver up to 50 units over the next 5 years.

The MQ-9B SKYGUARDIAN represents a pinnacle of RPAS technology, combining long endurance, multi-mission flexibility, and seamless integration into civil airspace. The new mission trainers developed under the agreement will leverage CAE’s cutting-edge PRODIGY IMAGE GENERATOR technology. Powered by a state-of-the-art gaming engine, this system provides an immersive training environment with high-fidelity graphics and physics-based simulations. These trainers replicate real-world flight operations with unparalleled realism, ensuring that operators are well-prepared for complex missions. This emphasis on synthetic training reflects the shift towards digital immersion to enhance readiness across multi-domain operations. CAE’s expertise in simulation technology complements GA-ASI’s leadership in RPAS design, thus creating a comprehensive training solution that meets the evolving needs of global defence forces.

This partnership also aligns with GA-ASI’s Team SkyGuardian Canada initiative, aimed at fostering collaboration with Canadian businesses following Canada’s selection of the MQ-9B. By involving local industries in the production and support of these advanced systems, GA-ASI and CAE are not only enhancing Canada’s defence capabilities but also contributing to its economic growth.

Furthermore, the long-term agreement represents a pivotal moment for CAE, solidifying its position as a global leader in synthetic training solutions. By integrating PRODIGY IMAGE GENERATOR into mission trainers for the MQ-9B, CAE is setting a new standard for RPAS training, as the realism and effectiveness of these synthetic environments are critical in reducing operational risks and costs, making them indispensable for militaries worldwide. This is particularly significant given the growing adoption of the MQ-9B by countries such as Canada, Belgium, Poland, Japan, and India. Each of these nations requires robust training solutions to maximize the operational capabilities of their RPAS fleets.

CAE has already secured significant contracts related to RPAS support, such as a $250 million deal with Canada for training and maintenance services.
