Malaysia’s ATSC Completes First RMAF Su-30MKM Service Life Extension Programme 31/01/2025 | Mike Rajkumar

Malaysia’s Aerospace Technology Systems Corp. Sdn Bhd (ATSC) has handed over to the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) its first Sukhoi SU-30 MKM which has completed a 10th Year Service Life Extension Programme (SLEP). Malaysian Minister of Defence Mohamed Khaled Nordin was present at Gong Kedak Air Base, Terenggan for the aircraft handover.

The development of an indigenous SLEP capability will allow the RMAF to keep its SU-30 MKMs flying till 2035. The SU-30 MKM requires a complete overhaul every 10 years/1,500 flight hours.

In addition to the SLEP, ATSC also performed preventive restoration and overhaul work on the aircraft. The domestic upgrade effort is substantially cheaper than sending the aircraft to Russia.

The RMAF had acquired 18 SU-30 MKMs from Russia, starting in 2007 and there are rumours that only half of them are now operational. ATSC was formed in June 1994 and is a subsidiary of Malaysia’s National Aerospace and Defence Industries Sdn Bhd (NADI), which hold a 70% stake in ATSC followed by Russia’s RAC MiG and Rosoboronexport, which have a 25% and 5% stake respectively.
