Poland orders a support and rescue ship for the Baltic 28/01/2025 | Giuliano da Fre'

The year 2024 ended with the start of a new naval programme for Poland. On 27 December, a contract worth around EUR 230 million was signed to acquire a modern multi-role support ship.

The RATOWNIK - which will be built by an industrial consortium consisting of Polska Grupa Zbrojeniowa SA and PGZ Stocznia Wojenna, together with the Maritime Technology Centre's Research and Development Centre - will fulfil several roles.

First, the protection of strategic underwater infrastructure, in light of what has been happening in the Baltic since the outbreak of the Russian-Ukrainian war, which has spread to the seabed. In addition, the RATOWNIK will operate in support of NATO naval forces, in SAR missions and for the rescue and salvage of submarine units; the latter role is linked to the ORKA programme, aimed at the acquisition of 3 submarines to replace the old ORZEL, which is now close to being phased out. In turn, the new auxiliary ship will replace the 2 small PIEST class rescue vessels, in service since 1974, in service with the 3rd Gdynia Flotilla.

The RATOWNIK has characteristics and dimensions that are decidedly superior to those of the vessels to be retired: 96 m in length, 19 in width, a full load displacement of 6,500 t, and a new generation of engine apparatus, which will guarantee a speed of 16 knots and a range of 6,000 miles. At the stern, the unit will have advanced rescue and underwater search equipment, associated with hull sonar and spaces for operating ROVs, AUV/UUV-type craft and mini-submersible rescue craft. A large flight deck allows for an AW-101 type helicopter and drone operations. The ship will also have fire and pollution control systems, operated by a crew of 100 men, with space for additional personnel.

The first steel cut is scheduled by 2025, followed in 2027 by the launch, and delivery in 2029.
