On 14 January 2025, the Uruguayan Ministry of Defence exercised its option for 5 A-29 SUPER TUCANO aircraft, as part of a contract previously signed with Embraer, the aircraft's manufacturer, in August last year.
The contract provided for the supply of 1 SUPER TUCANO plus the option for 5 more aircraft, for a total of 6 A-29s. In addition to the aircraft, the Uruguayan Air Force is expected to acquire 1 flight simulator.
Embraer's A-29 SUPER TUCANO continues to accumulate orders. At the end of December, in fact, the Brazilian company had announced the signing of a contract for the supply of 4 aircraft to an undisclosed African customer, and an order for 6 aircraft from another unspecified customer.
Furthermore, on 16 December, the Portuguese Ministry of Defence signed a contract with Embraer for the acquisition of 12 SUPER TUCANOs for the Portuguese Air Force.
Portugal thus becomes the launch customer for the NATO variant of the A-29 SUPER TUCANO, named A-29N, and characterised by NATO standard communication systems and advanced avionics (plus other differences not disclosed by Embraer).
The A-29 is a multi-role turboprop aircraft capable of performing various missions, including ISR, armed ISR, air patrol, close air support, light attack and training. Overall, the SUPER TUCANO has been ordered in more than 290 examples and is in service with over 16 Air Forces, having logged 570,000 flight hours (of which over 60,000 in combat operations).
