Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) announced on 15 January, that it had completed the succesful maiden flight of its prototype amphibious attack helicopter (MAH) in December 2024.
The flight test took place at KAI’s newly completed Rotary Wing Flight Center in Jinju Ibanseong-myeon. KAI has stated that it expects to complete developmental testing of the MAH by 2026.
The MAH’s maiden flight lasted approximately 20 minutes, including taxiing, taking off, and performing hovering, circling, forward/backward/left/right flights, S-shaped circling flights.
The South Korean airframer now plans to conduct tests in the areas of flight speed, altitude, and hovering altitude in the main mission weight state to verify the flight performance and weapon operation capability of the amphibious attack helicopter.
KAI began development of the amphibious attack helicopter in October 2022, completing the basic design in April 2023, and the detailed design in September 2023. The first prototype helicopter began ground testing in October of last year.
The MAH is based on KAI’s SURION-based amphibious utility helicopter ‘MARINEON’ and will feature the latest avionics and armament systems from KAI’s new Light Armed Helicopter (LAH). The amphibious attack helicopter will be operated by the Korean Marine Corps.
