Patria has just unveiled a new modular mortar system known as the TREMOS at the Future Mortar Systems Conference in London.
The TREMOS mortar system emphasizes protection through mobility, allowing it to move quickly on the battlefield. It is capable of delivering rapid firepower thanks to its shoot-and-scoot capability, enabling the system to fire and swiftly relocate, thereby enhancing its survivability in combat situations.
While specific technical details about the TREMOS have not been extensively disclosed, it is expected to build upon Patria's experience with previous designs while incorporating new technologies to address evolving military requirements. According to the company's available literature, a key characteristic of the TREMOS system is its modular design, which likely offers flexibility in deployment and may facilitate easier maintenance or upgrades. Another standout feature would be its advanced recoil technology, which would allow for seamless integration into various types of vehicles. This technology would minimize launch stresses and eliminate the need for ground support, enabling the system to exit quickly from the firing position after the last round is fired.
The system's integration module includes a connecting interface, facilitating rapid integration and movement between different vehicles, such as 4x4, 6x6, 8x8, and light tracked vehicles. This modularity not only optimizes available space but also allows for customization based on specific customer requirements.
The TREMOS is engineered for rapid deployment and efficient execution of fire missions. It can open fire within 60 seconds of arriving at a firing position and is capable of leaving immediately after firing its last round. This quick action is complemented by enhanced accuracy, as the system can be equipped with an Inertial Navigation Unit (INU) and a Battle Management System (BMS) connection, ensuring precision from the very first shot.
In terms of ammunition handling, the TREMOS features a modular solution for storing and preparing ammunition safely. It can carry all necessary types of ammunition and can operate independently or as part of a larger mobile firing unit. Additionally, the system is designed for crew efficiency; it can be operated by just three personnel, with crew positions equipped with seats that allow them to remain in operational positions during vehicle movement.
Finland has announced its intention to purchase this new mortar system from Patria, featuring a 120 mm mortar, indicating confidence in its capabilities and potential to meet the defense needs of the Finnish military. Deliveries are set for 2025.
The TREMOS represents a significant addition to Patria's existing mortar systems, which also include well-known products like the NEMO (NEw MOrtar), recently under evaluation for the US Army as well.
