Poland begins its SAFE spending spree with BORSUK IFVs, KRAB howitzers, more ROSOMAK 8x8s 10/06/2026 | Gabriele Molinelli

The spectacular growth in size and capability of the Polish army continues with the award of multiple huge contracts enabled by SAFE funding. Poland has secured SAFE low-interest loans for €43.7 billion by 2030 and has started signing multiple large contracts with national industries.

Some €6.5 billion in SAFE funding has already flown into the Bank Gospodarstwa Krajowego and government timely followed up with a multitude of awards. Huta Stalowa Wola is set to benefit from a vast package worth up to around €14.2 billion, and contracts have been signed at a ceremony on May 30 for the delivery of new BORSUK IFVs, KRAB self-propelled howitzers, supporting vehicles, RAK mortars on ROSOMAK hulls and additional ROSOMAK ambulances and command posts.

Specifically, 146 more of the domestically designed and built BORSUK IFVs have been ordered for circa €2.07 billion, with deliveries due by 2030. This new order adds to the first tranche of 111 vehicles that was ordered in March 2025, with deliveries due to wrap up by 2029.

The 257 vehicles from these two tranches will be enough to re-equip 4 mechanized infantry battalions while also allocating 25 vehicles to training. It is still just the beginning of a project which has a framework in place for some 1,400 vehicles. The BORSUK, a “light” IFV with full amphibious capability, weighs approximately 28 metric tons, is 7.6 meters long, and accommodates a crew of 3 alongside 6 dismounts. It is equipped with a ZSSW-30 remotely controlled turret with 30x173 mm gun and SPIKE anti-tank missiles, developed jointly by Huta Stalowa Wola and WB Group, a Polish electronics and defence company.

Another contract will see the delivery of another 96 KRAB tracked self-propelled 155 mm howitzers, enough to equip a further 4 Regiments in the “REGINA” 24-guns organization. This adds to 168 KRAB between vehicles already in operational use, in delivery and in production, sufficient for 7 REGINA sets. Going towards 2030, the Polish Army will thus be able to field 11 KRAB Regiments. Dozens more KRABs had already been received but have subsequently been handed to Ukraine.

Another contract will see the delivery of another 8 Fire Modules of M120K RAK turreted 120 mm mortars, which implies the production of 64 ROSOMAK 8x8 with RAK turret plus accompanying vehicles. A thousand trucks and other supporting vehicles types are also being acquired from HSW, Jelcz, Rosomak, Wojskowe Zaklady Lacznosci No. 1, and PIT-Radwar for use within 12 Battalions equipped with HOMAR K rocket artillery system.

In the same occasion, 30 ROSOMAK 8x8 in medical evacuation variant have also been ordered, for more than €118 million, with deliveries by the end of 2028. 94.5 million have gone towards 18 ROSOMAK in Command Post configuration: both types will be distributed across tank battalions equipped with the K2 (GF and PL variants) South Korean MBT type.
