DSA 2026: Hyundai WIA KH178 105 mm howitzer undergoing evaluation in Malaysia 24/04/2026 | Atul Chandra (Reporting from Kuala Lumpur)

Evaluations are underway in Malaysia of Hyundai WIA’s KH178 105mm/38 calibre towed howitzer, as the company competes in a Malaysian Army procurement programme.

Speaking to FW MAG at the show, an official from Hyundai WIA’s local partner confirmed the company’s participation in the Malaysian Army tender for 36 new 105 mm towed howitzers. The systems are intended to equip two artillery regiments.  The official added that evaluations are ongoing in Malaysia with an evaluation result expected by July 2026.

Hyundai WIA is also displaying its 105 mm lightweight self-propelled howitzer (SPH) for the first time at the ongoing DSA, marking its Southeast Asian debut. The 105 mm howitzer was first unveiled publicly in October 2024 at the KADEX exhibition. The SPH is mounted on a Kia Light Tactical Vehicle (KLTV) with mass production slated to begin later in 2026/27.

Hyundai WIA in partnership with its local partner is proposing local assembly of the howitzers from completely knocked kits (CKD) and creating local MRO capability in Malaysia. Additional value-added services worth approximately MYR 150 million, will include gun tows for each gun tow vehicle, a Korean integrated fire control system (IFCS) and various accessories. Gunnery training courses for artillery officers will also be offered.

The KH178 Mk1 has a maximum firing range of 18 km when using extended range base bleed (ER-BB) rounds. The maximum rate of fire is quoted as 15 rounds/ minute, with a sustained rate of fire of three rounds per minute. The towed howitzer weighs 2,650 kg.

The Malaysian Army presently operates 18 LG1 Mk III 105 mm lightweight howitzers which were ordered from KNDS in 2018 and assembled locally by Advance Defence System Sdn Bhd (ADS). The induction of 36 additional 105 mm/38 cal howitzers will continue the modernisation of the Malaysian Army’s artillery capability.
